A Cento for Poe

School’s First Day

Written for Vena Elementary school

No more Summertime play.

Put away those
beach pails
swimsuits
and
water toys.

Those hot joyous days
when you’d gaily
run
in the noontime sun
are done.

At least for now.

Pull out your
backpacks
and
folders.

Sharpen your
pencils
and
count your
markers

Pack your
lunches
and
head off to school.

And remember --

If today
your thoughts
drift away
to the times
you would
lazily
swing on your hammock,

Don’t forget --

It’s time for
the mind to awaken.

Dust off
those books
set aside
in June.

It’s not the end of
all that’s
fun
and
joyous.

It’s the
beginning of
all that’s
new.
